PRECAST ABUTMENTS FOR KUWAIT FLYOVERS

The author describes Kuwait's need of a series of flyovers to relieve junctions on the grid road system. Some flyovers incorporate a full diamond interchange. Steel sections are fabricated in Japan, shipped, and erected on site. Bridge design details are presented, for building on well compacted sand. A description is given of the arrangements for materials storage, precasting the concrete sections and curing in high temperature conditions. The use of sulphate resistant cement is noted. Reference is made to the method for moving precast units which virtually eliminates damage. The stages of construction from provision of a detour road, to the carriageway surfacing and white lining are listed. (TRRL)
