PLASTICS FOR THE INTERIOR OF VEHICLES

KUNSTSTOFFE BEI DER INNENAUSSTATTUNG VON FAHRZEUGEN

In vehicle engineering plastics are mainly used for the design of vehicle interiors. Two thirds of all plastics used in the vehicle replace felt, damping materials and cladding materials; only one third replaces metals. However there needs to be more discussion of the use of plastics because of the increasing demand for comfort and ease of operation, new safety and legal specifications and the changed situation in the energy and raw material sector. Plastics can be very useful for meeting the safety specifications. Materials have been developed which do not split even when they are severely deformed. Plastics are also useful from the point of view of energy saving and vehicle operation. As regards costs, with plastic components 80 percent of the manufacturing costs are material costs, whereas with manufactured steel sheets only 50 percent of the costs are material costs. It is stated that new plastics are constantly being developed which are better suited to particular tasks than earlier plastics. Particular mention is made of a fibre reinforced thermoplastic.
