OPTICAL HORN - ASPECTS OF A TREND

LICHTHUPE - ASPEKTE EINES TREND

Giving signals with the optical horn happens more and more frequently; it is based on an understanding amongst road users and clearly exceeds what is prescribed by law. 13 meanings of various uses of the optical horn were found. Most of these are correct from the point of view of law; others are not, for example "thank you", "take Care" and "radar". A concrete example (use of the horn before a pedestrian crossing, resulting in the pedestrian crossing the road and being run over when the driver only wanted to give a warning) is used to discuss the consequences which can arise if the various road users put a different interpretation on the warning. The question as to whether a warning should be given, and if so, how it should be given, and whether warning alone is sufficient, is discussed. (TRRL)
