TESTS ON TWO MULTIBEAM SKEW BRIDGES OF COMPOSITE STEEL/CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION

Those two bridges of normal spans (35 and 40 M) are without cross-bracing, and very skewed. The tests carried out on the bridges led to confirm the accuracy of calculation results and brought to light the bearing capacity of such a structure. Skew test results showed that finite element calculations on the model of an isotropic slab with eccentric ribbing gave a very accurate analysis of these structures. Results of bearing pressure measurements and of the transverse distribution test have confirmed that the beam grid calculation (stress) gives a sufficiently accurate determination of the stresses on the main composite girders and of the bearing pressures of such structures. Because the forces generated in the wedges of the concrete deck by the loads applied outside these zones are small, the calculation of an eccentrically ribbed slab (more costly) on a model is recommended only for the analysis of the effect of large concentrated loads or for any other special condition affecting the bearing behaviour of the structure.
