THE STATISTICAL STUDY OF ROAD ACCIDENTS. DAY 1. THE COLLECTION AND PROCESSING OF ACCIDENT DATA BY THE CENTRAL STATISTICS INSTITUTE

LO STUDIO STATISTICO DEGLI INCIDENTI STRADALI. 1A GIORNATA. LA RILEVAZIONE ED ELABORAZIONE DEGLI INCIDENTE DA PARTE DELL'ISTITUTO CENTRALE DI STATISTICA

ISTAT (Istituto Centrale di Statistica) collects, processes and publishes highway accident statistics on a monthly and yearly basis. The highway police, civil guards, and local statistics offices, are initially responsible for the recording of accident data and the completion of report forms which are transmitted to ISTAT for analysis and processing. These forms comprise about 530 questions divided into 8 sections covering: (1) accident location; (2) highway and weather conditions; (3) vehicles involved; (4) nature of accident; (5) damage to vehicles; (6) drivers involved; (7) age of passenger and pedestrian casualties; (8) details of persons involved. A section is also provided for details concerning where the casualties were taken (hospital, medical attention, etc) and the names of persons killed. Some accident and demographic statistics for Italy and the EEC countries are presented in tabular form, covering 1957-1978. This paper was presented at a seminar on the statistical study of road accidents, held by the Italian Road Federation at Castelgandolfo, 21-22 February, 1980. (TRRL)
