SELECTION AND DESIGN OF HOT-MIX ASPHALT SURFACINGS FOR HIGHWAYS

When providing a hot-mix asphalt surfacing for heavily loaded highways the choice of asphalt type is usually made between continuously-graded and gap-graded types. In special circumstances a combination of either of these can be used with an open-graded asphalt. The report discusses the functions of a surfacing and also the factors which influence the peformance of a surfacing, as well as those to be taken into account when selecting the most suitable surfacing type. Recommendations are made in respect of the design method and the design criteia to be used in the case of different asphalt surfacing types for highway pavements. (TRRL)
