ROAD CONSTRUCTION AS AFFECTED BY THE CONFLICT BETWEEN MOBILITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
STRASSENBAU IM WIDERSTREIT VON MOBILITAET UND UMWELT
The interrelation is shown between the hitherto continuous growth in car ownership and usage on the one hand and the necessity for further road construction on the other. In particular the disparity between the extent of vehicle traffic and the degree of gross investment in roads actually undertaken is illustrated. The need for an adjustment of road space in line with traffic requirements related to the hitheto unbroken growth in private transport is confirmed by reference to the appropriate data. With reference to selected examples (Lake Constance area, Karlsruhe, Munich and othes) solutions for road construction are proposed which are both technically sound and at the same time acceptable to the environment.
