OPTICAL SCANNING RETURNS ... FOR CAR REPAIR BILLING

By adopting optical character recognition for decentralized inputing of car repair data into a microcomputer, Norfolk and Western has speeded the processing of 40,000 interline billings involving $2 million in accounts receivable. New reporting forms were developed to cover all standard repairs. Information is now compiled also on system cars for analyzing car failure trends, cost of maintenance, and billing audits.
