FUEL SAVING--A SHIPBOARD APPROACH

A formula for plotting curves of estimated fuel consumption in tonnes/day against revolutions is presented, obtained during a monthly test run at service speed and during steady operational periods at reduced speeds. Also plotted on the same graph are curves of ship and fuel/mile with the critical speed bands indicated. A target curve using either design data or sea trial figures is also shown. Should there be any substantial deviation from the target curve, an investigation is called for. The aim is to provide the small shipowner with an effective means of achieving considerable fuel savings, relying only on the ship's engineers.
