In the last 15 years, special types of hatch covers have been developed for ships carrying bulk cargoes, liquid cargoes, containers, and ro/ro-lo/lo cargoes. The Author reviews the development, over the years, of hatches and hatch covers for these four types of cargo, with particular reference to covers developed by Kvaerner Brug, or by this company in co-operation with other parties, for "open" ships. Among the more recent developments described and discussed are the hatch covers of the container/bulk-carrier Antwerpen, whose seven holds have electrically-operated piggyback side-rolling hatch covers. Some bulk carriers projected or already building have 24.5 m x 26 m hatch openings with hydraulic folding covers; these ships can also be used as full container-ships, and can carry three tiers on deck or on the hatch covers. Order from BSRA as No. 54,595.
