ORDER ANALYSIS OF VIBRATION BEHAVIOR WITH AN ELECTRIC DATA-PROCESSING SYSTEM, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SHIP PROPULSION INSTALLATIONS

There has not, in the past, been very much interest in analysing vibration with the aid of EDP systems. This has been due to the excessive time needed for processing the large quantity of data involved. However, the speed of modern EDP equipment, and a reduction in the number of calculation operations necessary, have together revived interest in this application of EDP systems. The Author explains in some detail the theoretical considerations and the solution of practical problems in vibration analysis with EDP systems, with particular reference to order analysis (i.e., analysis in relation to shaft rpm) and its application to ship propulsion systems. A worked example of this application is presented and discussed. Some features of vibration analysis with these digital systems are compared with those of analogue (band-pass filter) systems. The advantage of using an EDP system is primarily that the analysed values can be further processed in a sub-program. Order from BSRA as No. 54,629.
