ELECTRIC MOTOR PROPULSION USED IN ICEBREAKING BY CARGO SHIPS
STROMRICHTERGESPEISTE PROPELLERANTRIEBE FUER EISGEHENDE HANDELSSCHIFFE
This paper suggests that ships required to operate without icebreaker assistance in sea areas where thick ice may be encountered, propulsion by electric motors is advantageous. In most cases, dc-motors are used for this purpose. Very high output ratings may be obtained by the use of synchronous motors fed by cycloconverters.
