TOWARDS A MASTER PLAN FOR SABAH'S PORTS
An efficient port system is vital to the development of any coastal nation's economy. Nowhere, perhaps, is this more significant than in the Malaysian state of Sabah where a lack of internal roads has led to the development of a number of individual, coastally-based, local economies rather than an overall state economy. This article outlines the procedures followed in the development of a ports master plan for Sabah which should contribute towards the integration of the state's economy. It discusses port infrastructure, traffic forecasts, shipping patterns, port development strategies, plans and charges.
