The article discusses secondary steering gear systems, a subject which was first brought to the forefront following the "Amoco Cadiz" disaster. Successful sea trials were recently completed on the 74283 dwt shell tanker "Donax" of the retrofit kit developed by Hastie-Brown to meet the expected IMCO requirements for tankers of 40000 grt and upwards. An automatic failsafe system developed by Donkin is briefly described. Emergency repairs required to the steering gear of the 140260 dwt tanker "Texaco Spain" are reviewed. Order from NSFI as No. 21157.
