PERFORMANCE OF FIREPROOF LIFEBOATS OF REINFORCED PLASTIC FOR TANKERS

Results of tests on lifeboats of fibre reinforced plastics were as follows: (1) The materials of FRP tanker lifeboats, which are composed of self-extinguishing and fire-retardant additions can resist an oil fire of 1000 deg. C for 30 seconds even if there is no cooling water on the outer surface of the shell plates. (2) 0.6 mm is the necessary minimum water film thickness on the outer surface plate with thickness 6 mm in order to protect the boat and crew for five minutes in conditions of fire on the surface of the water. The resulting temperatures and heat fluxes of the boat are given. Order from NSFI as No. 21129.
