INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR QUICK AND SAFE HIGHWAY USE

INFORMATIESYSTEMEN VOOR SNEL EN VEILIG WEGGEBRUIK

Traffic information along the road can vary from fixed traffic signs with indications of names of cities, maximum speeds and temporary indications for fog, black ice and queues, up to advanced systems by which the driver inside his vehicle can get or can ask for information, eg route selection. Motives for the introduction of traffic information systems are of two kinds. First to give information on the most suitable route to reach the destination and secondly to promote safe operation of the traffic by detecting the circumstances which can cause an accident. The possibilities of systems which transmit information from and to the vehicle, like the German Ali system and the Ariadne system, developed at the Delft University of Technology, are discussed.
