In investigating various gasoline engine combustion systems, Volkswagen engineers developed two types of stratified charge engines. One, termed the prechamber-valve system, used a third valve which admitted a rich mixture to a prechamber in which the spark plug was located. The other, termed prechamber-injection, incorporated both fuel injection and carburetion.
