SOME COMMENTS ON CERTAIN IDEALIZED VARIANCE SPECTRA OF THE SEAWAY CURRENTLY IN FASHION

The purpose of this note is to offer some comments on the variance spectra of seaways of the type which includes, among others, the Pierson-Moskowitz, Bretschneider and International Ship Structures Congress spectra, and on related aspects which enter into the prediction of the short-term statistics of a steady seaway. More specifically, the intent is to bring out an inconsistency which, even if not necessarily serious is, nevertheless, present when the variance spectrum describing the seaway contains the factor T cubed or Omega to the negative five power, where T and W are, respectively, spectral period and frequency. A partial solution is suggested which although as yet wanting in accuracy because of the paucity of supporting experimental data, removes the inconsistency and yields somewhat more plausible outputs. However, there still remains a point to be clarified with respect to the so-called spectral width parameter E.
