THE CREW-CUTTING PUZZLE
One of the most critical and baffling problem areas for high-cost flag containership operators is how to reduce manning costs and remain competitive. Tactics concentrating on super-automation and deals with seafarers' unions seem to achieve less and less at more and more cost, while smaller crews are exhibiting an undesirable and costly dissatisfaction with sea life and leave in droves. Fortunately the simple "trick" of solving this puzzle involves only a management reorganisation. This article examines the way several container lines are solving this problem by shipboard reorganization and decentralized shipboard management.
