REGENERATION AND RECYCLING OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. 4. RECYCLING OF RECOVERED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES WITH A DRUM DRYING-MIXING UNIT

REGENERATION ET RECYCLAGE DES ENROBES BITUMINEUX - 4 - RECYCLAGE D'ENROBES DE RECUPERATION AVEC UN TAMBOUR-SECHEUR-ENROBEUR

A recycling experiment was undertaken in February 1979 with a drum drying-mixing unit. Batches of 0/20 crushed mixtures differing in homogeneity were prepared and identification analyses helped to determine the necessary corrections for each batch. The experiment was conducted with a small drum drying and mixing unit with an output of 12 tonnes per hour. It demonstrated the possibility of recycling mixtures in different ways. Some mixtures contained 70% of 0/20 crushed recovered bituminous mixtures corrected with 30% of aggregates and approximately 2% bitumen, while others contained 100% crushed recovered bituminous mixtures. Laboratory tests showed that recycled materials had characteristics (simple and diametral compression) similar to conventional mixtures. These encouraging results should lead to a continuation of the tests on a commercial scale. It is planned to treat 10000 to 15000 tonnes of recovered materials using a new type of drum mixer/dryer with an output of 120 tonnes/hour with a view to defining costs, to drafting recommendations for the recovery, collection, storage of old bituminous mixtures and for the equipment necessary and its operation, and to studying the characteristics of these new mixtures.
