REGENERATION ET RECYCLAGE DES ENROBES BITUMINEUX ; 1) LE RECYCLAGE DES REVETEMENTS EN ENROBES HYDROCARBONES

A bibliographic study showed that the factors leading to research into the reutilization of aged bituminous mixtures are: the necessity of exploiting new sources of aggregates; the difficulty of finding places to dump mixtures removed from pavements; the need of economizing bituminous materials which are expensive and could become scarce. Four recycling methods were tested: (1) removal and crushing of the material to be reused as aggregate (with or without stabilization); (2) removal and cold-treatment with oil-based emulsions and resins derived from petroleum; (3) in-situ treatment with a scarifyer-leveller and addition of mixtures on the surface; (4) removal, crushing and heating in a plant with correction of the binder and reuse. Each of these techniques appears worthwhile but each case of reuse should be studied in its own economic context. Renovating products to restore its original qualities to aged bitumen have been developed for hot and cold treatment. Laboratory studies deal mainly with the restoration of the physical and rheological characteristics of aged bitumen and with the influence of the treatment as the mechanical characteristics of the mixtures.
