CRITICAL OPERATING STATES OF ARTICULATED TRUCKS UNDER VARYING LOAD CONDITIONS WITH RIGID AND LIQUID LOADS AND STEADY-STATE DRIVING CONDITIONS

The articulated truck system dealt with consists mechanically of three components: tractor, turntable and trailer. In practical operation varying loading conditions occur both with liquid and rigid loads. One must also expect significant differences in load distribution and in driving conditions. For the purpose of mechanical mathematical evaluation both the vehicle system and the payload must be represented by suitable, mechanically equivalent models. The numerically determined relationships of the system parameters which govern the driving behaviour of the typical tanker truck and the truck with rigid load show the extreme influence of the instantaneous loading conditions both for liquid (in some cases oscillating) and for rigid cargo. Further there was a significant relationship between all the determinate functions of yaw angles, rolling angles and wheel load fluctuations and the angular velocity of the steering corrections made by the driver. The important influence, known from accident mechanics, of the instantaneous velocity on the manoeuvrability of the articulated truck is clearly demonstrated. (TRRL)
