THE CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT OF THE ADHESION BETWEEN TYRE AND ROAD SURFACE; THE SCRIM APPLIANCE

MESURE EN CONTINU DE L'ADHERENCE PNEUMATIQUE-CHAUSSEE. APPAREIL SCRIM

The SCRIM appliance is used to continuously measure pavement adhesion. The measurements are made on a wet road with a smooth tyre at a speed of 60 km/h on main roads and 100 km/h on motorways. The machine gives average adhesion value every twenty metres. The data are stored on punched tape together with all characteristic points of the interinary recorded during the measurement operation facilitating the identification of the sections measured. Processing of the punched tape makes it possible: to obtain the chart of the adhesion values measured on the itinerary; to conduct statistical calculations on the measurements (average, standard deviation, etc); to plot for each section and itinerary the histograms of adhesion values. Rapid calibration enables the measurement system to be tested at any time. Studies have shown the close link between adhesion and accident risk. In order to maintain a constant level of quality over a certain period of time and to prevent increasing inaccuracy in measurements, a correlation was established in 1978 with the last machine produced and used in Spain. The very high coefficient of correlation recorded on surfacings of widely different ages and adhesion levels permits to confirm the measurements made over the last few years. (TRRL)
