A finite element formulation for stability problems of structures assembled from thin-walled members with open cross section is presented. The contribution of bimoment toward stability of unsymmetrical sections is included. Using the solutions of the homogeneous differential equations governing the static behavior as deformation modes, the stiffness and stability matrix are derived. The formulation has been programmed for use in digital computers and several appropriate examples are analyzed. The obtained results are exact for linear static problems and extremely close upper bounds for eigenvalue problems. (Author/TRRL)
