BENTONITE TUNNELLING BENEATH MAJOR SERVICES IN LOOSE GROUND

Construction of the Acton Grange trunk outfall sewer at Warrington required the construction of a 2.44 M internal diameter tunnel beneath high and low pressure water mains and a high pressure gas main. The tunnel has a cover of 5.5 M through loose, cohesionless drift deposits vulnerable to settlement. As ground settlement was of concern, the TRRL was invited to advise on settlement surveys to be carried out above the services and the advancing bentonite tunnelling machine. In addition, settlement measurements were carried out during excavation over a distance of 160 M before the area of the services. Details are given of measuring techniques and settlement profiles.
