BENDING MEASUREMENTS ON A GEARBOX FOR A FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE

Comparative bending measurements on the final drive of the SAAB 99 have been made by SKF in co-operation with SAAB-Scania. Pinion bearing housings of cast iron and light alloy have been investigated under varying load both at ambient and simulated operating temperatures. Measurements show that the resulting angle of misalignment between inner and outer rings of pinion bearings is not significantly altered by a change of housing material. It can therefore be expected that there will be no detrimental effect on gear mesh and bearing life should light alloy housings be introduced. (TRRL)
