ANALYSIS AND MODEL STUDIES OF FLEXIBLE CANTILEVER RETAINING WALL WITH SHORT HORIZONTAL RELIEVING SHELF
Cantilever walls have been used at wing walls and also as sheet pile walls with enough embedment. The relieving shelves have been provided in the past for flexible cantilever retaining wall also to reduce the earth pressure. Certain suggestions initiated by Jumikis and C.R.R.I, are available for such a design of wall. In a work carried out by author these approaches were found to be insufficient. Reinforced theory concept as postulated in ref 5 could not explain experimental results though C.R.R.I. approach was found to be good for guidance. This paper summarises the present knowledge on the subject and brings out theory for the design of retaining wall with relief shelves, which is then tested experimentally. The theory as is veified by the experiments shows that there is a substantial reduction in earth pressure due to installation of these shelves. (Author/TRRL)
