ALTERATION OF THE SURFACE TEXTURE OF ROAD SURFACES AND ITS INFLUENCE ON ACCIDENTS

VERAENDERUNG DER STRUKTUR VON STRASSENOBERFLAECHEN UND IHR EINFLUSS AUF DIE UNFALLRATEN

Accident statistics were analysed for a section of four-lane motorway 56 km in length and paved partly with concrete and partly with asphalt during a period of 11 years. The influence of the various types of surface texture and constructional methods for reducing accidents such as cutting of grooves or other surface treatments was assessed on the basis of the criterion "proportion of accidents during wet weather" for five accident black spots. It was discovered that in addition to coarse surface texture the micro-roughness has a decisive influence on the adhesion between the tyre and the pavement. The author also discusses the favourable influence on accident rates of the speed limits which were instituted during the observation period. (TRRL)
