ICE OBSERVATION HANDBOOK
In April 1977 the Fleet Weather Facility (FLEWEAFAC) Suitland began operational use of a revised aerial ice reconnaissance code. ... an updated compendium of aerial, ship, and shore codes and assorted terminology was necessary for the observer in the field and those activities that routinely make use of sea ice observations taken by these personnel. The Ice Observation Handbook was produced to meet this requirement. Complete explanations of the new FLEWEAFAC aerial code as well as the ship, shore, and WMO Ice Analysis codes now in use have been included. To aid in standardizing the reporting procedures, a list of abbreviations currently in use and a glossary of sea ice terminology approved by the World Meterological Organization is included. Graphic aids defining sea ice concentrations, size parameters, and a sea ice thickness matrix are also contained for reference. (Author)
