DESIGN WAVE LOADS AND THEIR CORRELATION

The present paper is based on research addressed to defining a method for the assessment of the transverse strength of ships. The problem of design wave loads is faced, and a procedure is suggested, lying between the wellknown "pseudo-statistical" and "fully statistical" methods, which preserves the simplicity of the former even though it has the scientific exactness of the latter. The theory allows us to combine the various loads acting on a structure in self equilibrated and non correlated loading conditions, once the correlation coefficients among loads are known; it leads to the determination of the long term probability distributions of said loading conditions. So the main disadvantages of the pseudo-statistical method end, consisting in lack of equilibrium and in correlation of various loading conditions. As a result, some loading conditions with fixed probability level are determined, which can be combined using the "square root law". This leads to define design loads in a rational rather than an empirical way. (Author)
