GEOTECHNICAL METRIC GUIDE

The purpose of this Metric Guide is to introduce metric terms and symbols to Head Office and Regional personnel and to assist the staff in the performance of their activities. The International System of Units, known as SI ("Le Systeme International d'Unites") is the accepted version of the metric system. It is essential that uniformity be maintained in the use of metric symbols, units and quantities since the language of measurement must be understood on an international basis. SI is under constant refinement and revision, and problems and uncertainties might arise as our experience with SI grows. It is the intent of the Geotechnical metric task force to issue revisions and amendments to this guide when necessary. This guide consists of three chapters: Chapter 1 lists common metric units likely to be used in routine daily tasks and activities. It also presents the principal rules governing metric practice and the writing of units, symbols, prefixes and numbers. This portion of the guide was prepared from the "Metric Practice Guide" published by the Ontario Interministerial Committee on National Standards and Specifications (Metric Committee) in 1975 and from the Metric Practice Guide, Can 3-Z234.1-76 which is Canada's National Standard. Chapter 2 of the guide lists recommended or preferred units, quantities or values to be used by Geotechnical staff. Procedures, activities, tests etc. covered by MTC or other standards are listed under the name and number of the particular standard. Chapter 3 consists of selected conversion tables of Canadian foot/pound units to SI units. (Author)
