STATISTICAL STUDY OF THE GRADATION OF MTC BASE COURSE AGGREGATES (GRANULAR "A")

In compliance with the MTC Task Force objective and encouraged by U.S. experience, a pilot study was implemented to introduce Ministry staff to the statistical approach for sampling and testing, obtain practical know-how, setup and test the system and develop tentative statistical parameters for a few selected construction materials and/or processes. One material which readily lends itself to the statistical approach is Granular "A", a closely controlled processed granular base course aggregate with a relatively narrow specification band. The objectives of the pilot study should clarify some of the uncertainties and answer some of the questions concerning variability, dispersion and conformance with the specification limits of quarry and gravel pit based aggregates. Thus, the objectives of the pilot study were formulated as follows: (1) To introduce the basic statistical approach to MTC construction personnel in contract sampling and testing of Granular "A" aggregates for acceptance. (2) To identify the differences in gradation for the material sampled at the source or in the stockpile as opposed to random sampling on the road. (3) To study the distribution, standard deviation, variances, dispersion etc. of pit and quarry based material gradations, sampled both randomly on the road (pilot study sampling) and conventionally at the source (historical data). (4) To develop proposals for a statistically sound interim sampling, testing and acceptance procedure for 1979 contracts involving Granular "A" base course aggregates. (5) To gain practical experience and indicate the development potential of a fully integrated quality assurance specification for base and sub-base materials, including the contractor's process control, control charts, acceptance sampling and adjusted payment.
