VOIDS IN THE MINERAL AGGREGATE: TEST METHODS AND SPECIFICATION CRITERIA

One of the methods of ensuring good pavement durability has been by the use of "Voids in the Mineral Aggregate", (V.M.A.) as one of the tests for the design of bituminous paving mixtures. Because of certain inaccuracies in this test method, other alternative tests have been investigated. The study establishes that the V.M.A. test and test procedures used are still the most satisfactory method. The specification criteria, however, have been significantly changed. These changes will allow for some aggregate formulations that were previously considered "not satisfactory", thus providing for a substantial increase in material cost savings. The new specification system and criteria have been adopted by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Ontario and will appear in the new revision of M.T.C. Form 310. (Author)
