Weak subgrade treatment using geogrid reinforcement

In order to demonstrate and quantify the benefit of geogrid reinforcement in improving the bearing capacity of weak subgrades, a full-scale laboratory as well as two recent full-scale instrumented field trial beds were constructed and evaluated by the authors; one in Germany and another one in Australia. In each project the variation in observed in-situ bearing capacity and the modulus parameter was evaluated over a series of variants, including geogrid strength/stiffness, geogrid combination, thickness and quality of cover materials. The results demonstrate a clear improvement in the bearing capacity of the geogrid reinforced section when compared to the unreinforced sections. Similarly, the reinforced trial beds exhibited a considerable reduction in the vertical deformation and lower magnitudes of normal stress being transferred to the underlying weak subgrade were observed. The results also demonstrated a clear influence of strength parameter of the geogrids on the performance of the geogrid reinforcement.
