Settlement of a multi-storey carpark structure on Perth sand

A seven-storey above-ground reinforced concrete carpark structure is founded on individual pad footings that support each column and are arranged on a regular grid spacing. The structure is situated on a typical Perth sand derived from Tamala Limestone, generally loose to medium dense within a 4 m thick zone below founding level, becoming medium dense to very dense with depth. Settlement monitoring points were established on selected columns just above ground floor level prior to construction of the first suspended floor. Conventional level surveying of these monitoring points was carried out periodically during construction and at several times over a period of more than 4 years post-construction. Based on these results, projected total settlements over a 50-year period from the start of construction are in the range of 26 mm to 44 mm. The monitoring results are presented and compared with results from several simple linear and nonlinear methods of analysis, including incorporation of the effects of soil creep.
