Vehicle Manufacturers Make Strides on LATCH Ease of Use

This article updates readings on the ratings for 2019 vehicles with regard to the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) systems, including the ease of use of these safety devices. The author notes a market increase from the 2015 ratings, when a majority of new vehicles rated poor or marginal in LATCH ease-of-use. For the 2019 vehicles, 23 earn the top rating of good+, 31 are rated good, and 87 rate acceptable; 49 are marginal and only 4 vehicles received a rating of poor. LATCH systems are designed to make the installation of child restraint systems, such as car seats and booster seats, much easier. The ease-of-use rating is based on criteria that have been shown to minimize installation mistakes. The article is illustrated with full-color photographs (including an illustration of the difficulties of installing car seats in pickup trucks) and one table lists the vehicle manufacturers and models in the two highest-rating categories.
