Effectiveness of Knee Airbags Across Two Crash Paradigms
This study analyzed crash data from 414 frontal crash tests and police-reported data from 14 states to compare injury rates for drivers of vehicles with and without knee airbags. The police-reported data was not statistically significant with a very slight reduction in overall injury risk (from 7.9% to 7.4%) in those vehicles with knee airbags. The frontal crash tests found that knee airbags did not provide a substantial safety benefit. In fact, in some tests (small overlap tests) knee airbags were associated with worse injury outcomes.
