Life Cycle Assessment of Asphalt Binder
This study presents an industry-average life cycle assessment (LCA) on asphalt binders manufactured by Asphalt Institute (AI) members in North America. It covers raw material sourcing and extraction, transportation, refining, and final blending. This data can be used when transportation agencies are developing environmental impact statements. The LCA is based on information from 12 AI member refineries and 11 terminals in the U.S. and Canada. Asphalt binders covered include binder without additives and binders with 0.5% polyphosphoric acid, 8% ground tire rubber, and 3.5% styrene-butadiene-styrene. Tables present the impact assessment results for each asphalt binder by environmental impact category. Resource use, output flow, and waste results are also included.
