Economic, transport and territorial aspects have to be in line so that this mode of transport can work properly. It is also necessary to have enough waterways that link the hinterland with sea ports. The Danube River that is the second longest river in Europe flows through ten European countries. In spite of its length, the volume of cargo has been lower than on the Rhine and its tributaries as the result of some aspects that have happened in the Danube countries since the 1990s. The main goal of the paper is to focus on status quo of transport on the Danube, analyze of strengths and weaknesses and prepare the measures that could help to improve this situation.
