Narrow gauge for large scale transport the plantation railways of the Australian sugar industry

The raw sugar industry has been established in Australia for well over 100 years. Since the year 1900 its size has increased from a relatively small industry producing less than 100,000 tonnes of raw sugar to one which in 1996 produced 5.4 million tonnes.
