Track alignment for the Sydney system and beyond

Over the past 18 months the State Rail Authority of New South Wales has been looking at techniques for controlling the alignment of the Authority's permanent way. This was prompted because of the realisation that in order to provide the full benefits of faster and smoother riding rolling stock, a better quality of permanent way needs to be provided and maintained at a reasonable cost. The spinoff, of course, is that the better the permanent way quality, the smaller the dynamic loading, and the more durable the permanent way, particularly when running heavy freight trains.
