Keeping track through turnouts installation and maintenance of new equipment

As a general comment and observation it would be fair to say that of all the trackwork to be maintained, the turnout is the section of track which is least likely to display the standards expected of the particular line. Compared to plain track, the turnout is difficult to prefabricate, instal, adequately drain, adjust and resurface. Maintenance activities are more frequently frustrated by lack of access, track occupation, manpower shortages, material shortages and lack of suitable equipment than the neighbouring sections of ordinary track structure.
