This is a fine turnout - designing turnouts to meet maintenance problems

Turnouts! Who needs them. Well, just about everyone, it seems. No rail system can operate without turnouts. In the SRA of N.S.W. with its approx. 11000 km of track length, the turnout population, excluding private sidings, amounts to more than 1200. These turnouts contribute to the flexibility of the operation of the railway track, but also contribute to an unproportionally high maintenance expenditure in terms of rail length. They also have a vital influence on the reliability of the service. They therefore bear a closer look.
