Maintenance to heavy haul steelwork railway system

Australian Iron and Steel Pty Ltd operate and maintain 205 km of standard gauge (1435 mm) track work, 700 turnouts, 45 Diesel Locomotives and a rolling stock fleet of over I ,400 vehicles. Vehicles operating on the system range from 450 tonne Hot Metal Ladles with standard 3-piece bogies to 250 tonne ingot mould cars with 550 mm and 600 mm diameter wheels. A total of 26.1 M tonnes were hauled on the system in the last 12JT months ending May 1981. During this time, 4.217 M tonnes of coal was hauled to the Steel Plant and 3.86 M tonnes of product was despatched by rail. Of these tonnages, 3.64 M tonnes of coal were hauled on the AIS network from AIS owned Collieries.
