BTE studies on railway track life cost minimisation

This article briefly outlines the work being currently undertaken by the Bureau of Transport Economics (BTE) on the development of cost functions for rail track infrastructure through optimisation and describes how the work will assist in the examination of track maintenance problems. In reading this account it should be understood that the work is in an early stage and that the optimisation approach adopted is a philosophical strategy - optimisation is a long term goal and not a short term expectation. Furthermore, even if the Bureau develops the capability to undertake the maintenance studies described, it may not have the resources at the time to do so without assistance.
