Updated turnout development

This paper attempts to identify and describe some of the newer developments that have been or will be introduced into design and manufacture of turnouts in State Rail in recent times. The turnout is an extremely important element in the track structure. A turnout consumes a disproportionate amount of financial funds, both in initial supply and ongoing maintenance effort, when compared to an equivalent length of plain track. It is very important to ensure that the componentry is suitable for the task at hand. This includes higher speeds, higher axle loads and higher gross tonnages. The aim of adopting alternative methods, materials and/or manufacturing is to overcome deficiencies evident in existing practices.
