DANGERS FOR THE ELDERLY ON PELICAN CROSSINGS
The article emphasises the dangers presently encountered by the aged when using pelican crossings. The operation of crossing equipment is described and the failings of the pelican system are listed. These consist mainly of insufficient crossing time for the elderly, and insufficient observance of the 'flashing amber' period by drivers. A number of recommendations are presented for changing signal timings, and more supervision of crossings and stricter vehicle control is advocated. The following information is included in appendices:- (1) timings, mechanical and human, at a typical crossing, (2) results of interviews with old people at a typical crossing, (3) Department of Transport guidelines and help the aged proposed amendments, (4) road accident statistics.
