VERGE MANAGEMENT

WEGBERMBEHEER

After a short introductory chapter, the first part of this publication (chapters 2 to 4) deals with the general occurrence and origins of roads, with the part they play and with the relation that exists between roads and the surrounding landscape. The factors that cause the road and its immediate surroundings usually to differ more or less markedly from the rest of the landscape, and the phenomena associated with this, are outlined. This part of the publication is also concerned with the management and maintenance of road verges, as used to be practised in the past and sometimes still is. In the second and most important part (chapters 5 to 10) the subject of verge management as it ought to be, in the working group's view, is considered in detail. First are discussed the generally acknowledged functions of the verges. It is next pointed out that the verges can additionally be held to have a scientific function. Management will have to take account of this and appropriately adjust its attitudes. Possible objections of difficulties associated with an additional function of this kind are also considered. It is described in detail how the construction of new, and the management of existing, verges may be modified and what help can be given in connection with this, including the compilation of lists and the establishing of mowing schemes. A wide range of serviceable equipment is available for the mowing of verges and slopes and for the removal of the mowings. This equipment is systematically reviewed, and the advantages and disadvantages of the various machines for the purpose in question are discussed. The preparation of specifications demands much time and effort. Standardization and mechanization are therefore making rapid and considerable headway in this type of work too. All the same, it is still perfectly feasible to include what is considered to be desirable verge maintenance in the specifications. (a) (TRRL)
