UNDERPASSES FOR CYCLISTS AND PEDESTRIANS. ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN

ONDERDOORGANGEN VOOR FIETSERS EN VOETGANGERS. AANDACHTSPUNTEN BIJ HET ONTWERPEN

Over the last few years much attention has been paid to the interests of slow traffic (i.e. Mopeds, cyclists and pedestrians). Many town centres now have pedestrian precincts and also the development of the woonerf concept has given pedestrians and playing children their proper place among other traffic. More and more underpasses have been constructed or are in the planning stage. The authors report on a survey carried out in an underpass for slow traffic in The Hague; they also drew up an inventory of another 25 underpasses in the west of the Netherlands. Aspects of security, actual situation and alignment, accessibility, interior design and maintenance are discussed. A check list covering major and minor points of attention is presented. (TRRL)
