The report attempts to present conditions that may determine the placing of noise barriers. The following factors have been studied: (1) road safety (side obstacles, visibility, signs); (2) maintenance; (3) special factors such as walkways, bikeways, bus stops, passability, vegetation, aesthetics. With these factors in mind it was endeavoured to make proposals for placing rules. However, due to variations in existing highway standards between the nordic countries this proved to be difficult to accomplish. Therefore, the proposal is given in the form of a check-list of factors that have to be taken into consideration when putting up noise barriers. An example is given of how the check-list is meant to be used in practice. 19 barriers, 5 barriers on banks and 12 bank constructions in the nordic countries are examined. The presentation of them is made in the form of information about location, screening data, ground plan, cross section, constructional drawing and photo. In an appendix, a survey is given of the distribution of the types of barriers i.e wood barriers, concrete barriers, barriers of metal and other materials, banks and barriers on banks. (TRRL)
